Phonoroid is an avant garde folk band formed in 1996 by Vanessa Vassar and Axel Manrico Heilhecker. The band blends the country music of Vanessa’s childhood, her classical vocal training, and Axel’s bluesy, universal understanding of music. Vanessa writes and sings lyrical poems while Axel plays guitar and a variety of other instruments.
The name Phonoroid references the sound equivalent of a polaroid. Most songs were recorded as a first take, capturing raw and imperfect sounds and improvisational melodies.
Phonoroid has created 3 albums and 2 soundtracks with artists from around the world. Several Phonoroid music videos were featured on ARTE and MTV.
