Phonoroid creates a beautiful world of sound... songs of photographic poetry.

— Rolling Stone

Phonoroid is an avant garde folk band formed in 1996 by Vanessa Vassar and Axel Manrico Heilhecker. The band blends the country music of Vanessa’s childhood, her classical vocal training, and Axel’s bluesy, universal understanding of music. Vanessa writes and sings lyrical poems while Axel plays guitar and a variety of other instruments.

The name Phonoroid references the sound equivalent of a polaroid. Most songs were recorded as a first take, capturing raw and imperfect sounds and improvisational melodies.

In keeping with the group’s name and the album’s title, “Two Many Frames” is a cinematic record, often reliant on the pictures evoked by songs as much as the music itself. Vassar’s haunted vocals bring to mind a similar sense of dusty roads and heat-scorched horizons as the skewed guitar lines and Delta blues stomp that accompanies her.

Phonoroid Lyrics

don’t hang too many frames on the untouched walls, don’t stuff your closet full of colored shoe boxes. if you have shallow roots leaves appear with little rain and you will bloom. leave room in your backseat for open-windowed air. take deep breaths smile at every new field of lava. if you have shallow roots leaves appear with little rain and you will bloom. spin fresh webs that glisten in the morning sun. delicate but stronger than they know. if you have shallow roots leaves appear with little rain.

— Phonoroid, "Little Rain"
it is exactly that moment when i go out of focus cactus flowers red rocks and Indian cafes sharper in your mind. features blurred lighting hazy words fading. picture me a polaroid soon in view. place me on the dashboard with your chewing gum silk sunflowers the plastic fly and somebody’s painted toes. and picture me a polaroid soon in view.

— Phonoroid, "Phonoroid"
